Fonts

Our teen drama's sub-genre is Youth Drama. The story of our teen drama is serious so can use simple sans fonts. Also, since the setting is in the streets of London we can also use graffiti fonts or grunge type of fonts.

Here are images of fonts we can use for the titles in the title sequence

Amendments to be made

Upon analysing our rough draft, we have noticed that certain changes need to be made in order to improve the standard of quality of our short film. Below are the reforms that we will hope to make to improve our film.

Cut down some scenes. Some scenes that we have shot are far too long and use too much time of our film. We will need to cut down the excess and make sure that we mainly use shots that are valid.

We need to continue using match-cuts - we have started well with this filming technique and if we continue to use match cuts it will ensure us getting a better grade.

Composition
In the clip to the left, there is a shot that needs improving. The face in the shot shouldn't be in the bottom of the screen, instead we need to align it in the centre of the shot as there is too much space above the subject.
We will also tie in flashbacks with action.
For example with the shot to the left, we will have a flashback of the missing girl performing the same action in an identical way to show how the main character links with the missing girl.

Teen drama analysis : Kidulthood

Kidulthood Analysis
Sub-genre: Romance/Action/Comedy

Title credits order:
Filming companies, Production, Title (Kidulthood)

What type of title sequence does the film have? It is titles on  blank screen

Producers: Menhaj Huda, George Isaac and Damian Jones.

Mainstream or independent? - It was independent production as they didn't have the finances nor the fame to make the movie a blockbuster hit, however they were able to make it a nationally famous teen film.

What storylines or plots are introduced in the films opening? -
The storylines that are introduced are conflict and bullying, romance and lastly peer pressure.

Who are the main characters?-
Lover boy - Jay
Funny one - Moony
Cliché 'dumb' blonde - Becky
Bully - Sam
Middle of the mix - Trife *protagonist*
Innocent girlfriend - Alisa

What social groups are we introduced to in the films opening sequence?-
Bullies and the victims
Rebels
and lastly the lovers

How do the teen/youth characters interact with the adults-
The teens often go against adult authority. This is often because the teens in the film believe that they have come of age and are already mature. It is what is expected of teen films, as teen films often portray youth to be rebelling against adults as seen with Jay in the clip to the right.

What are the main camera shot types used in the film?-
It is often varied, however there are predominantly group shots that are used in the film. This is probably due to the fact that the director wanted to show the different friendship groups in the film.

What kind of editing techniques does the film use?-
Very often the film is at a fast pace which means the viewer barely has any time to think about the last scene, thus highlighting the fast paced lives teens lead.
The protagonist Trife has the most screen time as the movie is mainly about him.

What kind of soundtrack does the film have?-
The film has an urban sounding, hip hop play-track which represent the youth of today and the type of music they would have listened to.

What lighting techniques are used in the film?-
The lighting in the film is often dark and gloomy. This creates and elegiac atmosphere and makes the whole plot of the film seem dark and quite depressing. This is most potent in the final scene (seen to the left)

What key locations or settings do we see in the film-
The film is set in West London and the key locations are places such as the school and the house party.

What are the key props in the film?-
The gun and the baseball bat. The fact that the key props are tools of violence suggest that violence isn't something that is unusual to the teens in the film.

What did you like about this film? Is it a good example of a teen film?-
Yes. I really enjoyed the action and the realism of the film. It was interesting to watch, yet it was about subjects and matters that young people in London can relate to.

24. Font

24) Fonts

Kidulthood is one of the most potent youth dramas in the UK today. Kidulthood often uses urban looking fonts as the one seen in the picture. This is to break away from the 'typical' formal fonts that are used in other films. The urban looking fonts mean that the target audience (being the youth) can relate to the film.

It is not just Kidulthood, but there are numerous youth dramas that use these urban fonts in their films. Thus meaning that these font styles are seen and are automatically relatable to youth drama films.

Hence, we have decided that we will use urban fonts in our film so that our target audience will be able to relate to our film. The urban fonts will mean that the youth will automatically notice that our film is of the youth drama genre.
